Episode 14

Sometimes when you go out on a date, some magical things will happen.  For us. it had nothing to do with the food or the Indian/SouthEast Asian atmosphere, but more of the crazy ass people you wind up sitting next to.  Also, I have 2 updated operating systems on my computer.

I will never try to attempt this again.

Well, at least not for a few more months.

I should have known better than to keep drinking that sludge.  WHERE IS MY GOD NOW??

In this episode, I share the songs that I have been listening to when I go for long runs… they put a spring in my step!  (Insert sad trombone) The weather has been great and I have been spending much more time outside and less in front of the computer.  As it should be, right?

If you are not as into running as I am, these tracks are also great to drive to when the weather is nice.  And if you like this kind of episode, I will do more of them!

This week has been fun and sad for various reasons.  Just a quick update on busy life stuff during spring break.  Also, I JUMPED OUT OF A PLANE!  Note to self: next time bring gloves and lots of chapstick.

Another story going all the way back to 1997.  I was working at Toys R’ Us at the time and I found myself at a crossroads.  Should I take another chance at college even though I had no idea what I was doing?  If I did, I would also have to continue to work for minimum wage and find the discipline to start and finish a degree.  But as you might guess, things didn’t go that way.

-Also, this is the beginning of a part of my series of stories that I have yet to “name.”  I will start doing some regular updates again, but I wanted to get the ball rolling on telling stories about my days in the military and beyond.  It’s a mish-mash of stories, but I like telling them!

My wife and I have been in the business of rescuing and/or helping others for many years.  I started out working as a crew-member on the Motor Life Boat Intrepid.  It is a 1963 tugboat that was transformed into a working rescue vessel for the Coast Guard.  I trained with other Coast Guard crew members on how to assist in marine rescue and maritime law enforcement.  Although it was an amazing experience, I still have memories of heading out into crazy weather to find a small fishing boat that needed a tow back into the harbor.

We would often train with the Coast Guard helicopters, as well.  We would recover a floating “dummy” out of the water, practice first-aid until the helicopter would arrive and then transfer the dummy to a metal “basket” that was lowered to our boat… then they would hoist the dummy up… and toss it out again.  Repeat.  But sometimes things just don’t go well.  Sometimes the weather or the seas become too violent for safe training, or there might be a mechanical malfunction.  Sometimes, shit happens.  When it does, we are ready to react and call off any situations that are deemed too dangerous.  Sometimes, there just isn’t enough time to react.  There is no official reason for the recent crash, but I know that the crew members did the best they could.  My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

We work in a dangerous job and it’s easy to take that for granted.  Stay safe.

A podcast recorded outside in the sun!  Yet, it was really cold and I was watching my neighbors tear apart the siding to their house as well as all the insulation.  Even when it is 37 degrees outside, my nice neighbors are still wanting to make their dreams come true.  In the cold.  Also- minimal TV watching!  I talk about how my schedule, hot-wife’s absence, and a plethora of colds have put a damper on TV watching.

Most episodes to come will be like this, with the occasional “decent” episode where I actually take the time to create a good story.

I was a little close to the mic on this one, but I am still learning.  In this episode: the pile of work and lessons to learn keeps getting bigger each day.  I reflect on my ability to learn from past mistakes to avoid making them again later on.  Also, I remember how good I was at basketball as a kid.
